A Worm On The Inside

Section image

Years ago I heard someone say; “The only thing worse than biting into an apple and finding a worm, is biting into an apple and finding half a worm.”

So, how does a worm get inside an apple? Perhaps you think the worm burrows in from the outside. No. Scientists have discovered that the worm comes from inside. But, how does he get in there? Simple! An insect lays an egg in the apple blossom. Sometime later, the worm hatches in the heart of the apple, then eats his way out.

Sin, like the worm, begins in the heart and works out through a person’s thoughts, words, and actions. Jesus teaches us this principle in Mark 7. We get so caught up in the rules of religious thinking – “Do this!” and “Don’t do that!”, that we lose the real heart of our Savior.

Jesus says, I want to love you and grow deeper in intimate relationship with you. I want to plant my seed in your heart and change you from the inside out. It’s not what you eat or don’t eat – what you do, or don’t do, that defiles you. You are corrupt from the inside out, but I want to make you a new person.

Spend time in God’s word and prepare to encourage others to allow Christ to “grow” in them.
